Protects the health of your pet
When temperatures drop and it gets uncomfortable outside, many pet owners worry about their pet’s health. Experience shows that the wet and cold weather is the start of the cold season. But how is it with our animal roommates? Often they are more robust than we believe. However, it is clear that cold and moisture can also weaken the immune system of our pets. Especially old animals can get sick faster in winter. Young and healthy animals do not usually catch the cold in the classical sense, but are more likely to be infected by their own species.
TBE in dogs causes fever. The first signs of a cold in animals
Who does not know that: The neck is rough, the nose is running and you want to crawl into bed. Hoarseness, runny nose and sore throat are usually the first harbingers of a cold. Sick pets have very similar symptoms. Often you recognize an incipient cold in animals already that your four-legged friends are noticeably tired and show decreased appetite. Frequent sneezing, breath sounds and watery eyes are added.
Not only dogs and cats, but also small animals and birds can catch a cold. Please keep in mind that just exhaustion and refusal of food can also point to other serious and in some cases even life-threatening illnesses. Therefore, as soon as the symptoms persist for a long time, you should definitely consult a veterinarian.
You can do that with a cold in animals
In case of a slight cold, there is a chance that it will go away by itself. But it takes time and rest. With a sick dog you should not take long walks in the cold, but rather make smaller laps. In case of rain or snow you should then rub it dry with a towel. The same goes for cats with clearance, who come home drenched. Dry heating air can aggravate the symptoms in all pets. When heating, you can hang wet towels or set up a fountain to increase the humidity in the room.
If the symptoms do not improve or even worsen, a visit to the vet is unavoidable. At worst, the relatively harmless cold in animals can otherwise develop into life-threatening pneumonia. Even if you are unsure how bad your pet’s condition really is, you should not shy away from a vet visit.
So you can prevent a cold in the dog
Of course, a cold can not always be prevented in animals. However, there are some things you can do to protect your pet’s health. For example, dogs should not sit or lie down long in cold weather. Otherwise, four-legged people, like us humans, can quickly get cystitis. Long conversations with other dog owners you move better in the winter therefore in the warm. Especially after the romp, the dog can cool down quickly and catch cold faster.
In winter, therefore, most dog breeds recommend several short walks instead of several hours. For robust and cold-loving breeds, such as the Siberian Husky, the excursion to the nearest park or forest may be a bit longer. Four-legged friends, whose coat is very short and who do not have undercoat, can and should be protected from snow and ice with a waterproof dog coat. If the dog has become wet while playing, he should be dried properly after the walk and allowed to warm up.
So you can prevent a cold in cats and small animals
Cats with clearance who can not return to their warm homes in between need a dry and isolated retreat. You can, for example, place a sufficiently insulated box on the balcony or terrace where the velvet paw can sit comfortably.
Rabbits can handle cold weather better than guinea pigs and can also spend the winter outdoors. However, they also need a shelter in which they can cuddle up to each other in cold temperatures. Otherwise, the long-eared can quickly fall ill with rabbit flu. Old or weakened animals should be brought to a sheltered location at sub-zero temperatures. Rabbits that are temporarily housed in the apartment, however, may only return to outdoor keeping when the temperature is mild.
In animals with osteoarthritis or similar diseases, you must also remember that cold usually worsens the symptoms. Dogs with joint problems should therefore be protected in cold temperatures only briefly outside and if possible by dog clothing.
You should pay attention to this, if you have caught a cold yourself
Often, pet owners ask if there is a risk of infection if they are ill themselves. Unfortunately there is no clear answer. Fortunately, we can not catch our pets with the flu, but with a cold already. However, the likelihood of infection is very low, especially in healthy and young animals. Nevertheless, you should cuddle with a cold not too intense with your four-legged friends. But they do not have to be banished from the living room. Chronically ill, old and weakened animals are more susceptible – so you should stay away from them. Of course, if you have recovered, you may cuddle up to your heart’s content. After all, what is more beautiful in the reflective season than to warm each other?
