Just in time for the freewheeling time, wobbly noses appear on the cage door in many households. Paws are pushed through the bars, here and there is excitedly squeaking. For many guinea pigs, chinchillas and other small animals, the daily freewheeling is a highlight that they can hardly wait. Leaving the familiar environment should not only satisfy the urge to move of the animals, but also provide variety.
In addition, the freewheel strengthens the bond between humans and animals – because when else can you play around on the man and get used to it? The domestic living room is extremely exciting for rodents and rabbits, but unsecured unfortunately also quite dangerous. What is completely harmless for us can mean a risk of injury for small animals. Before the freewheel, therefore, the human is in demand. Make sure that the freewheel is a safe place where your protégés jump around and go exploring.
What dangers lurk in the freewheel?
As the name implies, rodents have a habit that is annoying to humans: they gnaw on anything that gets in the way of their teeth. Although many animals spare the device, but with wallpaper and cables so many small animals is weak.
While the plucking of wallpaper is annoying but not threatening, it is really dangerous with cables. The pleasurable nibbling can in fact cause an electric shock and unfortunately this usually leads to the death of the animal. Cables should therefore be brought to safety either in cable ducts or behind a barrier.
There should be no poisonous plants in the freewheeling room. Guinea pigs and rabbits rarely reach elevated spots, but in some plants, a fallen and secretly eaten leaf causes poisoning. In addition, not all small animals move exclusively on the ground. For example, chinchillas and rats can climb and jump – so little is certain of them.
You like to leave your cigarettes on the living room table? During the freewheel smoldering sticks and tobacco belong in another room. Of course, this also applies to chemicals and cleaning agents. If your animals run free, you must exercise the same caution as with a toddler.
Other sources of danger are, for example, stoves, ovens or washing machines. The animals can burn themselves or disappear unnoticed in it. In the kitchen are also food that could be eaten by the animals and could not be tolerated. From the freewheel is therefore rather foreseeable. Many owners also do this for hygiene reasons and prefer other rooms.
Happy to be used corridor or bathroom. But here too caution is required. Unfortunately rats have fallen into the toilet and drowned. The toilet lid remains closed when freewheeling so better. Shampoo, shower gel and other bathroom items please clear away!
If the freewheel takes place in the corridor, the other doors should not be opened during this time – in a large family this can be a real challenge. Depending on the species, you have to provide different amounts of space, at best, before buying.
Open windows are a danger especially for climbing animals. In addition, with the windows open, there is the possibility that the animals are sitting in the passage and catching a cold. In cooler temperatures and on windy days, the windows should therefore be closed. If you hold chinchillas, croissants or other “climbing masters”, you can close the windows with every freewheel – surely for sure.
Newcomers have to get used to the freewheel
Attention: Freshly drafted animals should not be attacked with a two-hour freewheel, but slowly get used to the trips into the unknown terrain. If the animals in the future to get freewheel in the whole room, you can first define a small area and expand it slowly. At the same time, the duration of the excursions can be increased. Sooner or later, curiosity wins anyway and the animals explore their new kingdom by themselves.
